Exhibition

Friederike Altmann calls the result of her current research in the basement of the memorial centre ‘Wasseradern’ (water veins). The inhospitable dampness of the wing, the immediate proximity of the river and other ambivalent associations have inspired the Dresden artist to carefully investigate these spaces.

Friederike Altmann's works respond to the place of remembrance on Bautzner Strasse, especially the detention cellar. Seam drawings and textile objects form references to the element of water, which had an ambivalent effect on human existence here - agonising, healing, nourishing or threatening.

The artist works with haptic, modest means and materials in order to open up access to the former forced situation. The results are fragile textile works, delicate thread drawings, but also images of a historical forced architecture. With her research, she remains very close to the psychophysical experience of the inmates and adds an aesthetic, associative dimension to the scientific findings.
